What is the Summer Reading Challenge?
The summer reading challenge is set up by the reading agency in partnership with public libraries and funded by the Art Council England. You can read all about the challenge here.
Are you joining in the summer reading challenge? It’s been created to try to help stop the dip in the summer holidays of children reading.
We are going to have lot of fun in our Facebook group babble including reading book challenges, book quizzes , weekly book themes and more.
Wild World Heroes Summer Reading Challenge
The reading agency 2021 theme for the Summer Reading Challenge is Wild World Heroes and Nature.
The Wild World Heroes Book Collection is full of fun nature-themed reads specially chosen for this Summers Book Reading Event. If you are looking for some great nature filled book choices to get you started on the book challenge, you are in the right place.
We’ve recreated the lists on our Bookshop.org Shop.

Babble Reading Challenge
We’ve created a little reading challenge for children to discover either the word or a picture on the list from superheroes to castles. There is lots to hunt through reading different stories this summer.
Weekly Book themes on babble.
Every week in babble we will have dedicated posts and chat for the Summer Reading Challenge. We will have themes including:
Nature. These can include books about flowers, bugs, animals and more. Check out the links earlier in the blog about early reader and picture books on this theme.
Sea and Oceans – featuring our July’s Book of the Month Bea by The Sea which is about a little girls fears of sand and she overcomes her fear. Find the Book here
Starting School- – A big change after the summer holidays for a lot of children. Some may be starting school or nursery these books to help discuss change, the school routine and more!
Feelings – It is so important to talk about mental health and feelings with your little ones. We will chat about books which will help to start those conversations and encourage them to open up.
And more! We are excited about all the books all of us can discover this summer.
What else can you do to encourage reading this summer?
Set up bookish play set up. Create a fun play set up like @howweplayed2day does on instagram. A play set up from the story you can be as creative as you like. Then play along with the book which creates fun and engages them in to reading.
Book Crafts – @charlotte_and_the_boys on instagram creates some amazing sensory puzzles out of cardboard which are great for book inspired play. You could make an animal, a plant or whatever inspires you from the book.
However you choose to take part. We hope you have a great summer of reading!
