Hook and Loop or Snap Fastening on your Cloth Nappy?

How do you fasten your nappies - Hook and Loop or Snap Fittings. Here is a low down of the difference.

Which fastening is your preference on a cloth nappy?

The majority of cloth nappies have a fastening which would be either Hook and Loop (You may know the term ‘Velcro’ which is actually a Brand of Hook and Loop fabric) or Snaps. Exceptions are some fitted nappies that use a ‘nappy nippa’. (a stretchy Y shape with hooks on 3 points). Also Pull Up styles, either as a whole nappy or in cover form wouldn’t use these.
Some brands offer a choice in the same style but most stick with one type of fastening or other. It may be a factor in deciding if a nappy is for you or it may not matter at all.

Hook and Loop

Hook and Loop fastening often allow for more precision fit. As the options are not restricted to the position and spacing of the snaps. It’s common for child care providers and the less experienced user to prefer these for ease of use.

It’s also worth mentioning that hook and loop can be preferable for anyone changing nappies that has hand mobility issues.

Hook and Loop fastening needs protecting during washing and drying to prevent ripping and attracting fluff.

Snap Fastening

A plastic snap fastening. You them around the waist, or on the front rise on one size nappies. Snaps which are also known as poppers. They are the alternative to the hook and loop fastenings.

Cloth Nappy users often find that older babies and toddlers can often undo a hook and loop fastening themselves which understandably can cause problems. If you use nappies with snap fastening it can makes its harder for your little ones to get in to them. The snaps can take a little longer to get used to popping the nappy on using the right size snaps for your little one.

A Snap fastening can present as a ‘tidier’ nappy and requires less care this can possibly extend the life of a nappy. They are also easier to replace

Whichever one is your preference you are sure to love seeing your little ones in their cloth nappies.

Washing Guidance

  • Pre-washing before use helps increase the absorbency of your nappies. Follow the washing instructions below and repeat up to three times. You don't need to dry your nappies between pre-washes.

  • After use, knock any solids into the toilet (or remove the biodegradable liner if you have used one). Put the used nappy in the nappy bucket until wash day.

  • It can help to put the nappies on a cold rinse before washing as this ensures all the solids have been washed away before the washing cycle.

  • Your nappies can be washed at 60°C, although many parents find that 40°C is sufficient.

  • Use your usual detergent. Our nappies are designed to fit in with you, not the other way around!

  • Don't use any fabric conditioner or bleaching agent.

  • Your nappies are best dried naturally, although you can put them on a low setting in the tumble dryer. Natural is best for your nappies and the planet too.

  • Do be careful if they have been near heat such as the tumble dryer or radiator and don't stuff the inserts back in straight away. The heat can weaken the elastic and cause it to snap.

  • If you do need to use barrier/nappy rash cream, ensure you use a liner.
