Why aren't children read to more?

There are many reasons that this doesn't happen. Family hectic lives can get in the way, time and for some people it may be seen as chore (or a skill that is learnt at school) rather than pleasure with little ones. Screen time can also be a factor.
Some figures from the national literacy trust shows that 45% of 0–2s are read to daily or nearly every day. This increases to 58% of 3–4s, in part to get them ‘school ready’, and by 5–7 years, parents reading daily to their children drops back to 44% as the notion takes hold that reading is a subject to learn at school.

Reading to children from a young age will help encourage a love for books for future years ahead. And a love for a book can last a lifetime, I know myself I have read and reread Harry Potter again and again since the first one came out and my love for this magical series has stayed with me throughout adulthood.
Reading is a great and a wonderful way to keep you and your littles busy.
It can help take some stress away.
It can help improve vocabulary and language skills.
Helps develop their imagination and creativity.
Builds a greater relationship between your little ones
Can help increase their concentration.

Reading - The Most Powerful Gift

Reading to our children is our most power gift we can give to them. Not only does it provide comfort and reassurance to them but also gives you that one on one time that is so important.
It helps build self esteem, encourages their imagination and helps with their vocabulary but did you know it is estimated that less than half of 0-2 year olds are read to every day by their parental figure or nearly every day?

How do you make reading enjoyable for your littles ones?

Take some time, find an area where you can make quiet and free from other distractions. My not so little 6 year old enjoys reading together at bedtime when he is cosies up in bed as part of our bed time routine, this time may not work for your little ones and maybe you can get a little reading corner in their room to sit and read together. It is also really important that they have free access to books, ones they can reach and pick up at any point by themselves.

How do you encourage your children to read?

When it comes to choosing books for your children to read it is important to keep in mind their hobbies and interests. With a huge range of books available there is sure to be ones that grab their attention. From characters books such as Bluey, Minecraft to chapter stories and even non fiction something will pique their interest. Also ensure you choose the right level for your child as if you choose a book that they may struggle with they may not enjoy it or if you do get one with a higher reading level support them and read together.

Reading is a great habit for everyone to get in to, it can take you away from the day to day life in to a magical world of adventure, a world of their own. This habit like all habits take time and the love of reading starts from a young age. Babies are never to little to listen to their parents /care giver tell them a story.
