These Scooters are rubbish

Micro Scooters are renowned for their Swiss engineered and designed scooters. For over 20 years they have been leading the way in helping kids and their families move in a greener, cleaner, quicker - and let’s face it more fun way.

Whether that is the journey to school, commute to work or weekend adventures – getting from A-B on two or three-wheeled scooters is their domain.

In 2020 the team at Micro introduced their range of eco scooters and accessories.

How did they do it? Why did they do it? And what benefit does the range have for people and planet?

THE ECO SCOOTER RANGE

Discarded maritime plastic – fishing nets that have been abandoned or tossed in the ocean – make up 10% of marine waste. Their impact is severe, and it is increasing. Each year this waste kills or hurts millions of sea animals. Each year the waste strangles live coral reefs and introduces damaging organisms to reef ecosystems.

Working in conjunction with research and development boffins at Micro Scooters as well as third party experts the team at Micro Scooters have found a way to reuse discarded maritime waste and turn it into parts required to make scooters

.

How are they made?

The process works as follows

  1. Waste is taken from the maritime industry
  2. This waste is cleaned, crushed and turned into flakes
  3. The flakes are then dried and melted into pellets
  4. These melted pellets are coloured and poured into moulds that make up scooter decks
  5. The liquid cools and hardens…. voila one scooter deck is ready to go

The pellet process is used to make up the majority of an eco-Micro scooter. Parts such as the deck, brake and fender are all made from discarded maritime waste.

This means children can not only explore the planet on their eco scooter – but protect it too.

THE ECO ACCESSORY RANGE

The team at Micro were not just content with eco scooters. The complementary eco accessory range was introduced at the same time as the scooters.

Working with expert partners, the Micro team are helping to remove plastics from the ocean and transform them into rPET – recycled polyester yarn that is used to create their accessories. The result is cleaner oceans, and a second life for plastics that would otherwise pollute them for years to come.

From bags to bottle holders. Bells to lights. Scooter helmets to handwarmers. The extensive eco accessory range at Micro Scooters is all made from rPET.  The brand is working towards having their whole accessory range made in this way by the end of 2023.

IN THE COMMUNITY

1% For The Planet is a global network of businesses and individuals working together to tackle the environmental crisis. Micro Scooters donate 1% of the sales from their eco range to this organisation.  The monies donated go to highly vetted environmental non-profit organisations within the 1% For The Planet network who are doing extraordinary things to help our planet and future generations thrive.

Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) are another organisation supported by Micro Scooters. The team at SAS protect oceans, waves, beaches and marine life. Micro Scooters staff have gone a stage further and have organised and participated in 6 beach cleans near their West Mersea headquarters.

It is perhaps no surprise that the forward-thinking Micro Scooters have been awarded B Corp status. The certification measures a company’s impact on its workers, customers, community and environment. In 2022 the team at Micro Scooters were awarded full B Corp certification. This means they have accepted and are legally bound to put into practice processes that are good for people and planet.

The brand has come a long way in 20 years. They’ve revolutionised the school run. They’ve changed the way we journey to work. And now they are making us all think of new ways to do business sustainably.

Here’s to the next 20 years.
