Questions about Grimm's Colours
To clean the products, please wipe gently with a damp cloth and a little soapy water (if necessary). When drying, please do not place on the heater, otherwise cracks may occur in the wood. Please allow to dry at room temperature. Please never clean the toys with disinfectant or hot water!
Clean the dolls with a little mild soapy water only. Please be careful when cleaning the face. The colours on the face are water-resistant, but they can fade if you rub too hard. Allow to dry at room temperature.
Grimm's use wood from sustainably managed forests in Europe. As of August 2015, Grimm's are Certified. By purchasing certified products, you contribute to the responsible use of our global forest resources. On the one hand, certification achieves this through the definition and testing of environmental and social standards in forest management and, on the other, through the consideration of recycled material, which can be used in certified products.
Grimm's is a family-run company located in Hochdorf, Germany. The company does all of its design work, finishing, assembly and quality control at this location. All toys are labeled “Made in Germany” or “Made in Bosnia”.
Woodworking is done mainly by small, independent workshops. We work almost exclusively with these companies. We provide oversight and visit each of them regularly.
The largest workshop is in Bosnia, and its owner has become like family to Else and Sven Grimm. During the Bosnian War in the 1990s, this person came to Germany to heal from battlefield injuries; after his physical recovery, our paths crossed and he learned woodworking skills at our company over many years before returning to his family in Bosnia. His decision to start his own company was also due to the fact that linden trees (the primary type of wood used in making our toys) are plentiful and well managed there.
The company has grown from a one-person operation to a much larger one, with many talented craftspeople. The working conditions are excellent and the staff are proud to be part of an organization that provides:
- above-average salaries
- daily free lunches that are freshly cooked by the company's own chef
- regular work hours
- optimal protective work clothing
- workplaces to safeguard health
Their ethics and respect for all people and the environment means that they support their partners to do the same.
We love wood because it's a natural material that will always have various markings that show up in our products, making each one unique. Grimm's toys are always one-of-a kind, carrying unique marks made by nature. The unique variations are proof of quality, not defects. Discover the markings that make your Grimm's toy simply unique!
Grimm's products are oiled with a mix of different natural oils. The stronger smell is normal for natural linseed oil, which is completely harmless, and will decrease over time. Some of the scent from the oil will remain in the wood despite sufficient airing before packaging. The smell may also be stronger upon opening the package, but will dissipate when exposed to air. Please use a damp cloth for cleaning. Wipe gently and dry immediately. When drying, please do not place on a heater or in direct sunlight--otherwise cracks may occur in your product! Please allow to dry at room temperature; don't submerge in water or use disinfectant, hot water or similar cleaning agents on any part of your product--doing so could damage it irreparably!
Hand-sawn from a single piece of wood, the Rainbow is organic in design and makes use of an asymmetrical construction. This leads to a more pleasant and natural appeal when compared to the use of precise, symmetric stencils. As a result, individual arcs may need to be rotated in order to achieve perfect alignment! It is exactly what makes this toy so special and each one unique.
The Semicircles and Building Boards are larger than the individual parts of the Rainbow, sometimes by up to 1cm. This is intentional to allow younger builders to achieve greater success in building by not everything needing to be set precisely. This leads to more stable structures and more joy in playing!
All Grimm's products are manufactured and tested in accordance with the safety requirements of the European (EN71-3) and American (ASTM) Toy Safety Standards, which are recognised worldwide.
Grimm's colours are non-toxic water based stains that have been tested for colour fastness in contact with saliva. The test uses a liquid comparable to standard human saliva. However, some people's saliva may vary from the "standard," so some colour may transfer under those conditions, but the stains are harmless.
We can help you if you lose parts, or if a piece has been damaged. Please contact us!
Please keep in mind that unfortunately, we cannot replace everything. For example, the rainbow is made from a single piece of wood, so none of the bows is replaceable. If you are unsure if a part is replaceable or how to go about replacing it, please contact us.
When making their toys, Grimms carefully selects wood without defects. At each step, the quality of the wood is checked. However, wood is a natural product and not indestructible - so we can't rule out that something breaks. Children may be advised to use caution with their special toys. If something breaks, you can repair the damage with wood glue. For this purpose, we have prepared a small first aid kit for you.
If the reason for your complaint was a clear defect in the product, we'll gladly accept it. Please contact us.
